Finding the Right Keywords
Finding the right keywords to target should be the first step in any
successful SEO campaign. Here are some tips on finding the right keywords for
your website.
- Overture's Keyword Tool - Enter a keyword and this tool will
display all related keywords http://inventory.overture.com/
- Misspellings - Misspellings are often great words to target to
bring more traffic to your website.
- Industry Trade Journals - Read any reports or articles about your
industry and highlight a list of keywords
- Competitors Keywords - Look at the meta-keywords tag in your
competitors keywords
- Server Logs - Review your server logs and find the words that
people searched for to find your site. Be sure to include these words.
- Brand Names - If you sell gun bullets made by Remington be sure to
add Remington Bullets
- Thesaurus - You can't always guarantee the words that you think of
will be the words that others will think of so use a thesaurus to find similar
words.
- Regional Keywords - If your website targets a local audience use
your city. For example Lafayette Bicycles
- Regional Variants -For example Crawfish could be Crawdads,
Crayfish, Mud Bugs etc.
Writing Your Title Tag
The title tag is the single most important element to effective Search Engine
Optimization. The search results for Google and Yahoo use the page title as the
heading when a user searches for your keyword. The summary comes from the
description tag (see below). To write an effective title tag start the title
with your main keyword and then your marketing pitch. Title tags should be no
longer than 75 characters. For example "Website Design - Chose Comit
Technologies for all your website design needs"
Writing Your Description Tag
The Meta description tag is just simply a snippet of HTML code that belongs
inside the <Head> </Head> section of a web page. To be real
effective, it has to be placed after the title tag and before the Meta keyword
tag.
Your description tag should start with 2 or 3 of your keywords and should be
kept to about 250 characters including spaces. I prefer to add a marketing pitch
with an ending that wants to keep them coming back for more. For example
"Website Design that is Search Engine Optimized. Find out how Comit Technologies
can make your website more profitable. More information at
ComitTechnologies.com"
Meta Tags
Use Meta tags on every page that is created. The keyword and descriptions
should use the guidelines above, but always use this
format.
<title>YOUR TITLE HERE</title>
<meta
name="description" content="YOUR DESCRIPTION HERE">
<meta
name="keywords" content="YOUR KEYWORDS HERE">
